The MA in English program at Iowa State University provides two specialization options: Literature or Literature and the Teaching of Reading. Literature Specialization: This two-year MA program delivers tailored, high-caliber education for those aiming for careers in secondary or college teaching or planning advanced graduate studies. The curriculum enhances students' understanding of key literary movements while building expertise in analyzing literature and film, critical theory, and teaching methodologies. Nearly all students seeking financial assistance have received support in recent years. Our teaching assistantships rank among the top in the Big XII, offering competitive stipends, and new students benefit from a faculty-mentored research apprenticeship. Participants frequently present at academic conferences, win teaching and research honors, and occasionally publish before completing their degrees. Literature and the Teaching of Reading Specialization: This 30-credit MA program serves certified educators pursuing advanced literary studies while working toward a reading endorsement. Participants engage with graduate-level British, American, and world literature courses alongside three reading-focused classes from Iowa State's School of Education. Most English graduate courses are scheduled for late afternoons, evenings, or online to suit working teachers' schedules. Faculty often incorporate teaching-focused assignments and assessments, and students can choose to complete a pedagogy-oriented Creative Component for their final project. This track particularly benefits upper elementary, middle school, and high school educators, including those teaching dual-enrollment classes.
