Today's society faces unprecedented challenges where earth sciences play a vital role. Climate change, shrinking energy reserves, water shortages, conflicts over mineral resources, and catastrophic events like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes dominate news cycles with growing regularity. The earth and atmospheric sciences program welcomes students from the Colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Arts and Sciences, and Engineering. Graduates pursue careers in energy, mineral and water resource management, natural disaster mitigation, weather prediction, oceanography, and various environmental fields. Other career paths include environmental policy, law, medicine, science communication, and K-12 science education. The Earth & Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) program provides a holistic view of Earth's interconnected systems. What makes this program distinctive is its integration of traditional earth science with a modern, systems-based approach that examines the interplay between air, life, geology, and water to develop a complete picture of our planet. Students can specialize in areas like geophysics or tectonics, or cultivate interdisciplinary knowledge to comprehend Earth's complex systems across different time scales.
