The nanoscience major offers an in-depth exploration of structures at the nanometer scale, bridging the gap between molecular and cellular dimensions. At Northwest, this interdisciplinary program emphasizes hands-on lab work, from DNA extraction to nanoparticle synthesis for solar cell development. Students can concentrate in three specialized tracks: nanoscale biology applies cellular-level nanotechnology, either by examining living cells with nano-tools or mimicking biological systems to engineer nanodevices. Nanoscale chemistry centers on advancing drug delivery systems, carbon nanotubes, solar cells, and semiconductor nanowires through cutting-edge synthesis techniques and analytical instrumentation. Nanoscale physics investigates light-matter interactions at atomic scales, material property changes during size reduction, and practical nanomaterial design and analysis.
