Program Overview
Purdue's physics department enjoys global recognition for pioneering research and exceptional education at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Physics majors benefit from small class sizes (typically under 30 students) taught by research-active faculty. Students can begin participating in cutting-edge research as early as their second semester, with opportunities spanning experimental and theoretical work in fields like condensed matter physics, high energy physics, nanotechnology, nuclear physics, astrophysics, biophysics, geophysics, relativity, and interdisciplinary areas combining materials science, engineering, or computational science.
The department actively supports students in securing summer internships with external organizations. Graduates consistently gain admission to elite graduate programs and are highly recruited for technical positions in industry. Alumni have established outstanding career trajectories across diverse sectors including academia, corporate R&D, and government laboratories.
The applied physics program offers flexible specialization tracks. Students can customize their focus areas in consultation with faculty advisors. Current specialization options include:
Earth and Atmospheric Physics
Astronomy and Astrophysics
Physics Computing
Nuclear Science
Materials Engineering
Electrical and Computer Systems
Medical Radiation Physics
