The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures ranks among the nation's top programs. Faculty members primarily focus on German literature and cultural studies from the 18th century onward. Students majoring in German develop advanced skills for analyzing literary, philosophical, and historical works in their original language, along with deep insights into contemporary German culture and society. The curriculum emphasizes German-speaking traditions within broader European and worldwide frameworks. Translation-based courses complement Columbia's Core Curriculum, enabling students to participate in advanced seminars before fulfilling language prerequisites.

These practical experiences provide complete linguistic and cultural immersion, equipping students for advanced academic work and professional endeavors.
