The Deaf Studies major program has two main goals: (1) to provide foundational knowledge about Deaf culture and language, encompassing their historical background and societal interactions, and (2) to equip students for graduate studies or professional roles serving the Deaf community. CSUN takes pride in being among the rare mainstream universities nationwide with a complete undergraduate Deaf Studies curriculum, consistently recognized for excellence in deaf-related education. Furthermore, CSUN offers Deaf Studies students exceptional opportunities such as joining student groups, engaging with over 200 Deaf/Hard of Hearing classmates, accessing the western U.S.'s largest deafness resource collection, attending campus/community activities like Deafestivals and ASL/Deaf theater performances, and gaining work experience while earning academic credit.
