The Romance Studies department provides a rigorous curriculum aimed at fostering a nuanced international outlook. This thorough preparation enables alumni to critically examine various cultural artifacts and offer meaningful analyses.
Hispanic Language & Literature: The MA in Hispanic Language & Literature demands proficiency in both written and oral Spanish. Candidates must fulfill eight advanced courses (500-level or higher) concentrating on Hispanic literary traditions, film, theoretical perspectives, or cultural examinations. All available 800-level Spanish courses are compulsory. Full-time MA students generally complete the program within one academic year, enrolling in one theory seminar plus seven literature or cinema courses. Doctoral students take a teaching methods course during their initial year and postpone their eighth literature/film course until their second year.
Hispanic Language & Literature: MA graduates in Hispanic Language & Literature will achieve deep understanding of Spanish language and literary works across historical eras within worldwide frameworks. They will exhibit professional-level writing and research skills adhering to ethical guidelines. Attaining near-fluency in Spanish, graduates will demonstrate exceptional written and verbal communication abilities with native speakers.
The Master of Arts in Hispanic Language & Literatures cultivates expert knowledge of Spanish and Spanish-American literary traditions while exploring research methodologies and scholarly objectives in these disciplines.
Degree Requirements
Eight advanced courses (500-level or above) covering Hispanic literary studies, film, theory, or cultural analysis. LP 631 and LP 632 Portuguese for Spanish Speakers courses don't satisfy this requirement. Enrollment in all available 800-level Spanish courses is mandatory.
Demonstrated competence in written and spoken Spanish.
Students pursuing the terminal MA degree typically graduate within one academic year (9 months).
