MA in English - Writing Studies in Urbana United States | University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

The English Department provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. We encourage dedicated students to advance their knowledge of English, American, and Anglophone linguistics, literature, and cinema beyond undergraduate studies. Our Ph.D. curriculum primarily prepares academic professionals for teaching and research roles in higher education institutions nationwide. The M.A. program serves as a foundation for doctoral studies, with most candidates expected to continue toward their Ph.D. Consequently, we don't provide a standalone M.A. program. Students can specialize in Writing Studies for either degree, and Ph.D. candidates in other disciplines may pursue a Writing Studies concentration. While the M.A. can be finished in one year, many students opt for a two-year track, often while holding teaching assistant positions.
