This specialized program helps students hone their commercial writing abilities for crafting various works, including nonfiction books, novels, and screenplays. The Master of Professional Writing (MPW) stands among the pioneering programs in the U.S. dedicated to popular fiction and nonfiction. It builds upon a rich tradition within the M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication. For over six decades, the University of Oklahoma's Professional Writing program has equipped students to excel as freelance authors of books, screenplays, magazine features, and short stories. Our faculty consists of accomplished writers who bring real-world expertise and creative insight to their teaching. The MPW program fosters close mentorship between students and faculty members who are actively publishing novels, nonfiction works, and screenplays, alongside peers pursuing similar goals. With a distinguished legacy, the program has nurtured many of America's most celebrated authors, such as western legend Louis L'Amour, mystery master Tony Hillerman, and urban fantasy innovator Jim Butcher. Notable alumni also include Marilyn Harris, Ross Thomas, Carolyn Hart, Harold Keith, Bill Wallace, Jack Bickham, and Curtiss Ann Matlock.
