For over 130 years, we've led groundbreaking studies of ancient civilizations, earning global recognition for outstanding teaching and research. In 1904, the University founded the UK's first Institute of Archaeology, pioneering academic research in archaeological methods alongside Egyptology and Classical Archaeology. Today, our Archaeology research employs cutting-edge interdisciplinary techniques to investigate Palaeolithic and Neolithic societies across Southwest Asia, Mediterranean Europe, and Africa, covering human evolution, archaeobotany, archaeozoology, bioarchaeology, material studies, classical archaeology, ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean cultures, European prehistory, and Medieval/post-Medieval archaeology.
Our Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology enjoys worldwide acclaim for its interdisciplinary research spanning human origins, Old World prehistory, ancient languages and texts, and historical archaeology.
Key research strengths include Old World prehistory (particularly Palaeolithic/Neolithic periods in Southwest Asia, Mediterranean Europe, and Africa), human evolution, archaeobotanical sciences, zooarchaeology, bioarchaeological methods, material analysis, classical archaeology, ancient Near Eastern/Mediterranean studies, and British/European prehistory through to Medieval periods.
Fieldwork remains central to our research, with ongoing projects across the UK and internationally (including Bulgaria, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Iraq, Kenya, Jordan, Turkey, and Zambia).
With 42 academic staff and 60+ postgraduate researchers, we represent one of the UK's largest academic communities dedicated to studying humanity's past.
We encourage Archaeology PhD proposals aligned with our research expertise in Old World prehistory, human evolution, archaeobotany, bioarchaeology, zooarchaeology, material studies, Mediterranean/Near Eastern Iron Age archaeology, classical archaeology, Mesopotamian studies, and European prehistory through Medieval periods.
