PhD candidates undertake an independent research initiative supervised by a dedicated team. The maximum enrollment duration before thesis submission is 4 years for full-time students and 7 years for part-time students. Typically, active research (encompassing experiments, lab work, fieldwork, and data gathering) spans 3 to 3.5 years full-time or 6 to 6.5 years part-time. Following active research, students may apply for a writing-up period lasting up to 12 months. The combined duration of active research and writing-up must not surpass the maximum registration period. Theses generally should not exceed 80,000 words and must present original scholarly contributions with publishable-quality work. A successful viva voce (oral) examination is required for degree conferral. The Archaeology and Ancient History PhD program can be pursued either on-campus at Leicester or through distance learning.
