History unfolds every day, offering one of the most varied and captivating subjects for study. As archives expand with newly released documents each year, emerging scholars discover a wealth of topics to investigate, analyze, and reinterpret.

The MRes History program helps students build advanced expertise in historical research within specialized areas where the Department of History excels. Current focus areas include, but are not restricted to:

Medieval Studies
Early Modern History
Global History
US History
Contemporary History
Public History
Modern British Studies
This program equips students with thorough knowledge of research techniques, which they apply through an independent research project. This work allows them to explore major theoretical, methodological, and interdisciplinary approaches shaping historical studies. Participants strengthen their expertise in specific subfields while gaining the analytical skills to assess cutting-edge research and scholarship in the discipline.

Qualification Requirements

Graduates on this programme will normally have a background in which the study of history, international relations and/or politics has been a substantial component.

For overseas applicants, an honours degree in a relevant subject, such as History or Politics, is required, normally at an upper second class level or its equivalent.

Mature students add diversity and experience to the learning community and we actively encourage applications from people over the age of 21 at entry who may not meet the standard programme entry requirement.
IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band is equivalent to:

TOEFL: 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 Listening, 22 Speaking and 21 in Writing
