The MRes in Social Anthropology provides comprehensive training in social science research methodologies, with particular emphasis on ethnographic approaches. This program equips students with essential skills for doctoral research or professional roles as social science researchers. Alongside developing robust methodological competencies, students can take advantage of SOAS's distinguished resources in African and Asian languages, along with its humanities strengths in philosophy, linguistics, literature, and history.
Students may pursue the MRes Social Anthropology either as a standalone qualification or as the initial phase of a PhD program (such as within a 1+3 research training structure). When taken as part of doctoral preparation, the MRes provides accelerated entry into PhD studies. The curriculum develops research capabilities, including language proficiency, meeting the standards set by ESRC's research training framework.
The majority of participants typically advance to PhD enrollment upon completing the degree.
This MRes program specifically prepares students to meet ESRC research training standards. It's tailored for individuals holding either an undergraduate degree (minimum 2.1) in social anthropology or a relevant master's qualification. Most candidates continue to PhD studies after graduation. Upon completion, students will:
demonstrate practical proficiency in various qualitative and quantitative research techniques
understand fundamental methodological and theoretical concepts, along with the epistemological considerations of different research approaches
