Social anthropology explores human cultures and societies across the globe, examining each culture within its own context while recognizing how cultural understanding helps interpret our world. This field equips us with essential frameworks for comprehending human diversity, enabling deeper insights into how individuals, communities, and institutions perceive reality.
At SOAS, social anthropology serves as a gateway to the field's foundational concepts, historical development, theoretical approaches, and methodologies. No prior anthropology background is required to benefit fully from this program. It offers an ideal starting point for adopting an anthropological perspective on global issues or serves as a pathway for those considering advanced research degrees in the discipline.
For students with existing anthropology training, SOAS postgraduate studies provide opportunities to refine specialized interests through advanced coursework, potential language acquisition, and independent research projects via the Dissertation module.
This two-year MA program combines disciplinary studies with intensive Swahili language training, preparing students for professional or academic careers involving Africa. The curriculum enables engagement with African source materials in local languages while developing research and professional competencies for work across the continent.
The MA with Intensive Swahili also targets professionals seeking Africa-focused careers in government agencies (UK and international) or businesses requiring specialized knowledge for trade, investment, and development initiatives beyond European contexts.
