Tailored for new graduates and experienced mature students alike, our Master of Music (MMus) and Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) in Brass Band Conducting offer comprehensive technical instruction, collaborative experiences, and practical podium time to equip you for a professional conducting career.
As a Brass Band Conducting principal student, you'll receive personalized guidance from seasoned conducting faculty while dedicating substantial time to refining your direction skills during rehearsals and performances. Beyond scheduled brass band engagements, you'll have opportunities to interact with various ensembles—either as conductor or observer—both within our Conservatoire and with established groups like Services for Education and Tredegar Brass Band. Students in this program regularly participate in cross-disciplinary conducting workshops alongside peers from other specializations.
We encourage conducting students to initiate and lead their own performance projects, with faculty providing professional guidance throughout. These self-directed projects form a crucial component of your development. Both PgDip and MMus programs cultivate versatile skills vital for success in the music industry.
The UK's brass band tradition remains thriving, maintaining consistent demand for professional conductors across all levels despite its primarily amateur foundation. International opportunities also exist, with robust brass band communities in nations including Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand.
PgDip duration: 1 year
