The MA in Music (by Research) program's emphasis on individual study makes it ideally suited for exploring Musical Analysis. At York, our analytical approach consistently prioritizes real-world application: employing analysis to reveal and demonstrate how specific musical pieces function. All forms of analysis represent a journey toward comprehension. Instead of examining analytical methods purely theoretically, we concentrate on the more instinctive musical process of making sense of compositions. By uncovering the compositional foundations that evoke emotional reactions to music, and examining the methods and motivations behind a composer's creative choices, we maintain analysis's practical significance. Applicants should prepare a research proposal demonstrating how analytical methods will be applied within broader frameworks. The proposal should also suggest ways analytical findings might substantiate a larger argument, potentially through examining specific composers, historical periods, musical styles, or genres.
