At Sussex, we take great pride in our expertise in critical and theoretical approaches to music. As part of our department, you'll collaborate with experts across diverse areas including: musicology, opera, musical theater, popular music, computer-generated music, philosophy of music, electronic music, film scoring, and media music composition. Our faculty bridge the gap between elite and popular culture, conducting interdisciplinary research that incorporates perspectives from gender studies, critical race theory, performance analysis, technology development, and information science. You'll become part of a dynamic network of researchers and have opportunities to participate in our ongoing academic discussions and conferences. We seek candidates committed to developing innovative and thought-provoking dissertations. Both PhD and MPhil programs are available, with key differences in duration and research scope. A PhD requires significant original contributions to your field's knowledge base, while an MPhil involves independent research at a more focused level, culminating in a Master of Philosophy degree. Students may have the option to transition from MPhil to PhD during their studies.
