The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Psychology Practice is a four-year full-time advanced degree combining research and professional development. Students can also pursue this qualification part-time over six years. Designed according to Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) standards, this program offers Stage 2 training in Health Psychology Practice, expanding upon the Stage 1 academic foundation provided by Health Psychology Master's degrees.
As the first program of its kind in Ireland, it offers trainees supervised practical experience to cultivate essential skills for professional practice. Health Psychologists find employment across diverse sectors including healthcare institutions, research centers, government agencies, and academic departments.
The curriculum integrates doctoral research with hands-on training to develop five key competency areas:

Research Expertise
Successful completion leads to PSI registration as a Psychologist and full membership in their Health Psychology Division.
A PSI accredited MSc in Health Psychology, or equivalent, is required for entry. Entrants will be expected to have no less than an upper second class honours undergraduate degree in psychology. Candidates should be proficient in the use of the English language.
Students are selected by a Course Committee comprising the course Director(s), prospective research supervisor(s) and Head of School of Psychology. An interview process forms part of the selection procedure.
English Language Requirements
IELTS: 6.5 overall, no less than 5.5 in any one component; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88 overall (7 Listening, 16 Speaking, 18 Writing, 8 Reading); Pearson PTE: 61 overall, no less than 48 in any one component.
