The Clinical Psychology Doctorate is a rigorous three-year full-time postgraduate program that prepares students for professional practice as Clinical Psychologists within healthcare systems. The curriculum focuses on four core components: (1) Academic Proficiency, (2) Clinical Skills, (3) Research Capabilities, and (4) Personal Growth. Instruction employs interactive workshops grounded in adult learning methodologies, incorporating hands-on experience, practical skill-building, and reflective exercises.
This doctoral program in clinical psychology is a collaborative effort between the University and the Health Services Executive (HSE), along with other partner institutions. Participants receive a three-year fixed-term employment contract as Trainee Clinical Psychologists with the HSE or affiliated organizations.
While many clinical placements are situated in the Limerick/Clare/Tipperary region, trainees may be assigned to locations throughout Ireland. Program candidates must be prepared to commute to placement sites beyond Limerick County, as accepting admission requires flexibility regarding geographical mobility.
In addition to clinical rotations in specialized areas like Adult Mental Health, Intellectual Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders, Child and Adolescent Mental Health, and elective specialties, the program provides comprehensive support for professional growth. Students also undertake advanced clinical research training culminating in a doctoral thesis during their final year.
