The Doctor of Clinical Psychology is a three-year, full-time postgraduate program that prepares psychologists for clinical roles within healthcare systems. As Ireland's most recent clinical psychology training initiative, University College Cork's program maintains fundamental professional standards while developing its distinctive approach, as described in the Course Details section.
This collaborative program between the University and the Health Services Executive (HSE), along with other partners, divides trainees' time between academic work (45% at UCC) and practical clinical placements (55%). All participants receive a three-year employment contract as Trainee Clinical Psychologists with the HSE or affiliated organizations.
While many placements occur in the Cork/Kerry area, trainees must be prepared for potential assignments anywhere in Ireland, including locations outside Cork city. Program applicants acknowledge this travel requirement upon submission.
The curriculum covers diverse areas including Adult Mental Health, Intellectual Disability and Autism, Child and Adolescent Mental Health, plus elective specialties. Participants also benefit from Personal and Professional Development support and undertake advanced clinical research culminating in a thesis.
