The MA in Celtic Civilisation explores the rich heritage of Celtic cultures across Europe, from their Iron Age origins through the medieval period. This program highlights Ireland's connections with continental Europe - both its prehistoric roots and its later role in shaping European culture during early Christianity. Key areas of focus include Celtic literature, mythology, languages, scholarship, and the influence of Celtic saints.
The program emphasizes hands-on engagement with primary sources to enhance research skills. Participants can study medieval Welsh and Latin while pursuing specialized coursework in literary analysis, paleography, and manuscript studies. The curriculum includes guided independent research opportunities for students to expand their academic pursuits, culminating in a substantial 20,000-word thesis that allows for in-depth exploration of a chosen specialization.
Candidates should normally hold a Second Class Honours Grade I in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) in a relevant discipline. Candidates who hold a Second Class Honours Grade II in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) will also be considered under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) subject to the approval of the programme selection committee.
