The First Nations Child and Youth Care program equips students with essential competencies to assist individuals, families, and small groups across diverse practice environments that serve First Nations children, youth, and their families.
This curriculum addresses the specific requirements of First Nations communities and evolves through ongoing collaboration with Cowichan-area First Nations groups, along with contributions from First Nations students who incorporate their cultural teachings into the program.
This full-time program requires concurrent completion of core courses over two academic years.
Upon successfully finishing the two-year curriculum, including 300 practicum hours, graduates qualify for VIU's Child and Youth Care Diploma. As a "ladder" program, diploma holders can apply their credits toward a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care at participating institutions including Vancouver Island University, University of the Fraser Valley, University of Victoria, or Douglas College.
