Algoma University's Bachelor of Social Work program equips students with generalist social work skills to serve individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Located in Northern Ontario across Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins, with a distinctive commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding between Indigenous and other populations, our curriculum emphasizes Indigenous, structural, critical feminist, anti-oppressive, and anti-racism approaches tailored for northern, rural, remote, Indigenous, and Franco-Ontarian contexts. Graduates will gain entry-level competency in anti-oppressive practice with diverse populations in Canada while being introduced to anti-racism frameworks.
Our program explores numerous subjects, highlighting key differences between northern and urban communities concerning healthcare access, child welfare, and social services. Students will develop crisis intervention skills and learn to support abuse survivors, including those impacted by Canada's residential school system. Unique among Ontario institutions, Algoma U occupies the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School grounds, hosting survivor-led lectures that create unparalleled learning opportunities. Many classmates may be survivors themselves, offering profound insights into oppression, colonization, and self-determination processes.
Students have to complete higher Secondary School Certificate.
