To earn a PhD degree, candidates must fulfill key requirements including submitting a completed thesis, defending it successfully, and passing a comprehensive exam. Each student is assigned an Advisory Committee that offers support, guidance, and progress monitoring to facilitate degree completion. Vision Science students must present their proposed thesis research to this committee by their fourth term (or sixth term for part-time students). Full-time PhD students must enroll for at least 4 terms (for those entering with an MSc). The program has a maximum duration of 12 terms (4 years) for full-time students, with extensions requiring a formal Petition of Extension and proposed completion timeline. The University of Waterloo's School of Optometry and Vision Science stands as Canada's sole provider of accredited English-language optometric training for the Doctor of Optometry degree, alongside its graduate programs in Vision Science and Optometry. The school's comprehensive clinic programs offer students hands-on experience while delivering healthcare services to the community.
The program focuses on expanding knowledge about typical and atypical development, structure, and function of ocular and visual sensory systems, motor neural components, and the effects of neural aging.
