To earn a PhD degree, candidates must fulfill key requirements including submitting a completed thesis, defending their work, and passing a comprehensive exam. Each student receives guidance from an appointed Advisory Committee that monitors progress and provides support throughout the program. Vision Science students must present their proposed thesis research to this committee by their fourth term (or sixth term for part-time students). Full-time PhD candidates must complete at least 4 terms (for those entering with an MSc), with a maximum duration of 12 terms (4 years). Extensions require submitting a Petition of Extension with a proposed completion timeline. The University of Waterloo's School of Optometry and Vision Science offers Canada's sole English-language Doctor of Optometry program alongside graduate studies in Vision Science. Its clinical programs give students hands-on experience while serving public health needs.
Research areas span health informatics, medical education, healthcare standards, service quality, distance learning, professional communication, epidemiology, and clinical studies.
