To earn a PhD degree, candidates must fulfill several key requirements: completing a thesis, defending it successfully, and passing a comprehensive examination. Each student is assigned an Advisory Committee that offers support, guidance, and regular progress reviews to facilitate degree completion. Vision Science students must present their proposed thesis research to their advisory committee by their fourth term of full-time enrollment (or sixth term for part-time students). Full-time PhD students must register for at least 4 terms (for those entering with an MSc), with a maximum duration of 12 terms (4 years). Extensions require submitting a Petition of Extension with a proposed completion timeline. The University of Waterloo's School of Optometry and Vision Science offers Canada's sole English-language optometric training program accredited for the Doctor of Optometry degree, alongside graduate programs in Vision Science and Optometry. Its comprehensive clinic programs deliver hands-on training for students while providing healthcare services to the community.
This program focuses on enhancing knowledge about eye and adnexa anatomy, function, disorders, and toxicology through microscopic/macroscopic imaging and molecular & biological system approaches.
