The University of Manitoba's Faculty of Social Work created the Indigenous Knowledges-based Master of Social Work program to meet the demand for social work education that specifically serves Indigenous populations, their worldviews, traditions, and communities.
This Indigenous-focused MSW program enables students to:
approach social work through Indigenous lenses, comprehend the colonial legacy shaping current realities;
grasp concepts of equity, anti-oppression, decolonization, and Indigenous sovereignty, examine traditional helping methods suitable for social work practice;
revitalize and uphold Indigenous principles, customs, and systems, strengthen Indigenous self-determination;
foster strong ties with Indigenous organizations and communities, and grow as highly skilled social work professionals.
The program benefits both Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals pursuing personal growth and professional advancement as specialized social work practitioners.
