Food Science investigates the transformation of raw ingredients into nutritious, safe, and desirable food products, emphasizing either commercial applications or scientific principles. The Department of Food Science provides graduate programs at both Master's and PhD levels. Applicants typically need a research-focused Master's degree in a relevant field (such as food science, nutrition, biochemistry, or microbiology) with at least a 3.5 GPA in their final two years of study. This thesis-driven program mandates completion of 9 credit hours of coursework, with research topics tailored to student interests while aligning with departmental research goals.

The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the Food Science PhD program.
Admission Requirements:
To be considered for admission to the Food Science PhD program you must have:
A research-based Master of Science degree in the general areas of food or nutritional sciences, with a minimum University of Manitoba equivalent GPA of 3.5 in Master's coursework.
A secured thesis advisor.
Students with a Master of Science in a different scientific discipline will be considered for admission by the Food and Human Nutritional Sciences Graduate Studies Committee (FHNS) on a case-by-case basis.
Students with an honours degree from the University of Manitoba or equivalent may be accepted directly into the PhD program.
English language proficiency
IAEP (Intensive Academic English Program) - Pass Level 5/AEPUCE (Academic English Program for University and College Entrance) with a minimum of 65% overall
IELTS (Academic module) (International English Language Testing System) - 6.5 overall
Internet-based TOEFL - Overall score of 86 (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking - 20)
Pearson Test of English Academic - 61 overall
Cambridge Assessment of English at the C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency level - Minimum score of 180
