The Ph.D. program provides avenues for cutting-edge research focusing on socio-economic transformations, environmental policy and administration, as well as biological and physical systems. Students can also participate in a joint doctoral initiative with Guelph's Development Studies Institute. What sets these programs apart is their focus on the connections between natural environments and human societies. A core principle involves synthesizing and assessing knowledge across disciplines. Research spans diverse geographical contexts, from community-level studies to international comparisons, encompassing both industrialized and emerging nations.
The doctoral curriculum specializes in three concentrations: 1) environmental policy and administration; 2) biological and physical systems; and 3) socio-economic transformations. Candidates undertake investigations within these domains across multiple spatial dimensions, ranging from neighborhood-scale analyses to worldwide examinations.
