UBC's Music Education graduate programs cater to diverse professional aspirations, serving working teachers, researchers, administrators, curriculum specialists, and aspiring academics. The program offers focused study areas such as conducting techniques, teaching methodologies, early childhood music instruction, curriculum design, cultural music studies, media and technology applications, and educator preparation. Our faculty bring expertise across multiple research approaches, employing both qualitative methods (philosophical inquiry, historical analysis, psychological studies, sociological perspectives, arts-based investigation, and a/r/tographic practice) and quantitative techniques (quasi-experimental studies, survey analysis, and complex multivariate research designs). Students benefit from access to university-wide course offerings and are strongly supported in pursuing interdisciplinary studies.
One to two years’ of teacher education; or a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Education. In special circumstances teacher education may be waived for those applicants who have a university degree with sufficient standing and experience related to their proposed field of study.
