Conservation professionals play a vital role in safeguarding cultural heritage for current and future generations. The lessons from our predecessors' experiences remain invaluable, yet inaccessible without proper preservation. Consider how much historical knowledge vanishes when well-intentioned efforts to protect artifacts inadvertently cause their destruction.
This intensive Ontario College graduate certificate spans two years across four consecutive semesters. Beginning each September, students complete their initial three semesters (fall, winter, and summer) on campus. After foundational conservation training, participants develop hands-on expertise with diverse museum materials - from traditional substances like ceramics, metals, and textiles to modern materials and archival documents. The updated program emphasizes practical skills, experiential learning, and ethical professional standards that go beyond conventional best practices. Following theoretical and technical instruction, students work with artifacts from various local and national collections. Additional workshops, community projects, and off-campus assignments provide further conservation practice. The program culminates in a full-time, unpaid internship during the final semester (September-December), offering essential professional experience.
