The American Studies program fosters cross-disciplinary exploration of U.S. cultures and politics, evolving concepts of national identity, and the development of borderland and diasporic communities throughout history. Majors blend American Studies courses with relevant classes from other fields (including literature, history, arts, and social sciences) to examine these themes through local, national, and international lenses. By choosing a concentration area, each student creates an academic focus within the major. While promoting innovative interdisciplinary approaches, the program maintains rigorous expectations for foundational knowledge of U.S. history and culture. Prospective majors should schedule early advising with the director of undergraduate studies (DUS).
