The Applied Behavioral Science program currently provides a Master of Arts degree focused on Criminal Justice and Social Issues.

The Criminal Justice and Social Issues concentration highlights methodological and theoretical coursework along with specialized workshops designed to strengthen research capabilities and intellectual preparation for careers in criminal justice. Participants often are employed by, or aspire to work with, court systems, probation departments, law enforcement agencies, correctional facilities, or youth offender programs in both public and private sectors.

This foundational training in social science principles also serves as excellent preparation for those pursuing doctoral studies across various disciplines. Students without prior criminal justice experience can opt for a practical fieldwork component. The program concludes with an applied research project, allowing students to choose between a publishable journal article or a conventional thesis. Classes are predominantly scheduled for evenings, while workshops typically occur on weekends to accommodate working professionals.

Qualification Requirements

In addition to meeting the admission requirements of the Graduate School, students applying for admission into the Criminal Justice and Social Problems M.A. degree program are generally expected to have an undergraduate degree in criminal justice, social work, or a social science (such as sociology, psychology, or political science). Significant experience working in a criminal justice field can substitute for this expectation for students with degrees in other fields. Admission is generally for Summer or Fall Semesters, but students can be admitted year round.
You must submit an official transcript accompanied by a translation into English if needed. If your credentials cannot be evaluated by the Office of International Admissions, you are required to submit your academic credentials to an evaluation service and pay the cost of the evaluation.
If your native language is not English and you do not have a degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, you must have a minimum score on one of the following exams:
A score of 79/120 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (T.O.E.F.L.)
A band 6 or higher through the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
A score of 57 or higher on the Pearson PTE
Students who show proof of successful completion of an Intensive English Program from an accredited Institution or program accepted by international admissions are exempt from the requirement to take an approved English Proficiency exam.
Several departments or programs have set higher requirements for English proficiency. Visit the graduate programs page for more information.
You may be required by your academic advisors to take an English writing placement test. If you do not pass this test, you may be required to take more on-campus classes to improve your English. If you have earned a degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, you are exempted from the TOEFL requirement.
