With its interdisciplinary approach, Western's Latin American Studies (LAS) program provides a diverse curriculum that equips students with comprehensive knowledge of Latin America's history, culture, politics, social structures, and languages while examining its role in an interconnected global landscape. Western's LAS community emphasizes the growing need for cross-disciplinary cooperation and unified initiatives to develop a nuanced, multifaceted perspective on a region that shares profound ties with—and mutual influence on—the United States.
Administered collaboratively by the History Department and Modern Classical Languages Department, the program engages multiple academic units and gathers top-tier scholars from various disciplines across the university. Students pursuing a B.A. in Latin American Studies at Western can specialize in either History or Spanish. Additionally, LAS serves as an excellent complementary major for numerous degree programs, such as History, Spanish, Sociology, Political Science, Anthropology, Business, Journalism, and more.
