The PP&A Concentration is an academic program that expands upon the Foundation curriculum, equipping students for leadership roles in human services. This methods-driven program emphasizes the essential knowledge and skills needed for PP&A professionals to fulfill diverse responsibilities across government agencies, nonprofits, and community groups. Students tailor coursework and leverage field placements to explore specific practice areas, demographic groups, or social issues. Electives also allow students to pursue interdisciplinary specializations like Non-profit Leadership or Healthcare Administration.
Oversight of the PP&A Concentration falls to the Policy Committee, a Curriculum Committee subgroup consisting of full-time faculty teaching PP&A courses. Student and adjunct faculty participation occurs as needed. The Policy Chair leads both the program and committee meetings.
The program's core objective is practitioner empowerment—enabling professionals to drive structural and procedural improvements within organizations, communities, and society. These transformations aim to promote: (a) equitable resource and opportunity allocation, (b) enhanced understanding and response capabilities among officials and citizens regarding human welfare, and (c) expanded support systems helping disadvantaged individuals overcome personal and societal obstacles.
Effective leadership in this field demands proficiency in key functions:
Assessing groups, communities, organizations, and social issues, programs, and policies,
Designing, executing, assessing, modifying, and managing human service initiatives and policies,
Navigating and improving interpersonal, group, and organizational dynamics.
