The Spanish Department faculty prepares Ph.D. candidates to become both linguistic specialists and literary academics, balancing specialized knowledge with broad understanding, while fostering teaching skills and intellectual engagement. We envision our doctoral candidates as tomorrow's professors. Starting from their first day, we guide them to build comprehensive expertise in Hispanic studies while tailoring their education to focus on particular research interests. Doctoral candidates also gain practical experience through classroom teaching, coordinating study abroad programs, and assisting faculty with research initiatives.
Our program offers the distinctive advantage of allowing students to take courses with all graduate faculty members. They can collaborate with the Graduate Advisor to create customized study plans that draw from the department's wide-ranging Hispanic studies curriculum according to their academic goals.
