The doctoral program typically spans four years after completing the Master's degree. Graduate School policies mandate that all degree requirements must be satisfied within an eight-year timeframe, although the department may require students to complete outstanding obligations in a more compressed schedule. While there's no predetermined course count or credit minimum for the PhD, candidates must satisfy the foundational coursework outlined below. These prerequisites can be fulfilled through 3-credit graduate courses taken during either the Master's or doctoral studies. Upon admission to the PhD program, students will work with an assigned faculty advisor to identify which requirements were already met during their Master's work and which remain outstanding. Undergraduate-level courses, including Penn State's 400-level offerings or comparable classes from other institutions, cannot be applied toward distribution requirements. Transfer students should coordinate with their prospective advisory committee to assess whether additional preparation is necessary in fields beyond their specialization.
To be considered for the doctoral program, students must have completed an M.A. in English, M.F.A. or its equivalent. The records of potential students should indicate promise of superior work in doctoral study.
