The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese at Penn State provides graduate programs leading to M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Spanish, featuring concentrations in Spanish Peninsular literature (spanning Medieval to Modern periods), Latin American literature (covering Colonial to Contemporary works), and Hispanic linguistics. Qualified candidates may apply for teaching assistantships, with M.A. students typically receiving four semesters of funding and Ph.D. candidates securing eight semesters of support post-M.A., subject to satisfactory performance in teaching and academics. Limited fellowship opportunities are also offered.
The Literature program's primary focus is to equip students with comprehensive historical training in their chosen fields, delivering strong theoretical foundations and thorough preparation for academic and research professions. Faculty members explore innovative approaches that broaden traditional literary studies by incorporating diverse media, artistic expressions, and interdisciplinary methodologies.
The minimum requirement for admission normally will be the equivalent of an undergraduate Spanish major.
