Brown's PhD program in English provides specialized education in literary analysis, theoretical frameworks, historical perspectives, and comprehensive training in humanities research and teaching. The program emphasizes examining creative expressions, cultural patterns, and rhetorical strategies throughout English-speaking cultures. Students are supported in challenging conventional boundaries of literary scholarship, frequently collaborating with faculty across various disciplines and research centers at Brown. Our department boasts a multifaceted faculty employing diverse theoretical perspectives. Their scholarly work spans numerous fields including literary chronology, novel theory, poetic structures, intersections of literature and visual culture, African American and Asian American literary traditions, critical race studies, postmodern thought, historical contextual approaches, feminist critique, gender and sexuality research, postcolonial narratives, and cinematic analysis.
Graduates of non-U.S. colleges and universities who have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree may apply for admission to the Brown University Graduate School.
Regarding TOEFL, the recommended minimum score for admission consideration is 577 on the paper-based test and 90 on the Internet-based test. For IELTS, the recommended minimum overall band score is 7.
