The English PhD program mandates completion of 96 credit hours, encompassing 36 hours (equivalent to four full semesters) of course-based study. Students typically fulfill this requirement through five academic years of full-time enrollment (fall and spring semesters), supplemented by two six-week summer sessions during this period.
After completing coursework, students enroll in research hours (ENGL 691) while preparing for preliminary examinations and developing their dissertation. Graduate assistants are required to maintain full-time registration status (9 credit hours).
PhD candidates must form their committee and submit a degree plan via the OGAPS Degree Plan System by their second year's conclusion. Approval of this plan is mandatory before proceeding to preliminary examinations, with OGAPS stipulating a 90-day approval window prior to the exam. Additionally, students need to secure committee and Director of Graduate Studies approval for their preliminary exam reading lists at least 30 days before the examination date.
