The Department provides full-time Master's and Doctoral degree programs. Covering a wide spectrum of specializations, these academically demanding programs are designed to stimulate intellectual growth. Our Master's program equips students with a strong grounding in the professional analysis of literature and culture, while the Doctoral program readies students for active engagement in academia as researchers and educators specializing in English and American literature in its broadest sense. More than seventy graduate students benefit from direct collaboration with thirty-eight distinguished faculty members who are internationally recognized for their teaching and scholarly work across numerous historical eras, theoretical fields, and methodological perspectives. Our departmental ethos demonstrates our dedication to cultivating a welcoming atmosphere that balances academic rigor with supportive mentorship. We understand that professional achievement extends beyond coursework completion, examinations, dissertation writing, conference participation, and publication - it also entails acknowledging our collective role in generating new knowledge. Therefore, we regard our graduate students as integral members of the Department and motivate all to participate actively in both the intellectual and social aspects of our academic community, as well as in interdisciplinary collaborations across the university.
Applicants for master’s and doctoral programs must have obtained a bachelor’s degree from an accredited School or University prior to intended matriculation date.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
