The graduate program focuses on seminar courses offering specialized exploration of German literature, culture, and language. Graduate student instructors and aspiring teachers receive methodological training, while applied linguistics and second-language acquisition seminars deliver both theoretical and practical teaching foundations. The curriculum seeks to develop thorough historical understanding of German literary traditions, cultural studies, and/or linguistics, while cultivating advanced research skills, scholarly rigor, and independent thought.
Admission isn't granted for standalone MA studies, as the master's degree forms an essential component of the PhD track.
Two pathways exist to satisfy the language requirement. We highly recommend developing reading proficiency in two additional languages beyond English and German (Option 1 according to Graduate Policy guidelines). Popular choices among students include French, Latin, Dutch, Italian, Russian, Japanese, or Turkish. Alternatively, students may opt for proficiency in just one additional language (Option 3 per Graduate Policy). Language selections should align with students' research focus and anticipated professional requirements, made in consultation with faculty advisors. This requirement must be completed before the qualifying examination.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are: bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution; satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in your chosen field.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
