With roots tracing back to 1825 when Lorenzo Da Ponte - Mozart's renowned librettist and Columbia University's first Italian instructor - established its foundation, the department offers comprehensive studies in Italian literature and features a faculty with varied scholarly perspectives. Students benefit from cultural and academic initiatives organized by the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America. Butler Library's Paterno collection serves as an exceptional resource for Italian literary research. MA candidates complete ten courses, while those continuing to MPhil/PhD programs take eight additional courses, potentially including offerings from other departments. PhD students must demonstrate proficiency in Latin plus either German or another Romance language. Fellowships recognize academic excellence and potential, incorporating teaching and research components as vital parts of graduate training.
