The program provides research opportunities across all key areas of English literature and cultural studies, with specialized focus on Caribbean literature, Renaissance studies, feminist and gender theory, global perspectives, Irish literary traditions, and postcolonial scholarship. Students are welcome to take relevant courses in Modern Languages, Literatures, and History departments when suitable. According to the National Research Council's 2010 assessment of English PhD programs, ours ranked among the top two in the U.S. for diversity among both students and faculty. We strongly welcome applications from exceptional candidates from underrepresented backgrounds and international scholars. Every PhD candidate receives complete financial support, including tuition coverage and a living stipend.
Our program features comprehensive professional development through seminars and workshops covering academic publishing, faculty position preparation, and non-traditional career pathways. Within nine months of graduation, more than 90% of our alumni obtain full-time positions—with most securing academic appointments including tenure-track roles.
