Members of the Language, Literacy and Culture (LLC) program dedicate themselves to enhancing fair educational opportunities for diverse learners across all age groups in both academic and community settings. Our interdisciplinary research incorporates perspectives from anthropology, linguistics, psychology, sociology, the arts, and related disciplines, employing both qualitative and quantitative methods. We explore the interconnected nature of spoken, written, visual, and digital communication, as well as the relationship between teaching and learning across different environments. Faculty specialties encompass first and second language acquisition, bilingual education, literacy development, writing instruction, youth literacy practices, and educator preparation. Our work critically examines the links between race, ethnicity, discrimination, language bias, and how society shapes language and literacy concepts, while challenging single-language approaches to bilingual education and addressing systemic inequities in educational and community contexts.
