The PhD curriculum includes coursework, demonstrating competency in a secondary language, passing a qualifying exam, completing a dissertation, and defending it. Applicants must hold an MA or equivalent qualification before starting the program. Those who earned their MA outside UWM need to undergo an Academic Review. Candidates must successfully complete their qualifying exam within five years of beginning doctoral studies and fulfill all degree requirements within a ten-year timeframe from initial enrollment.

Qualification Requirements
Students in the UWM Master of Arts degree program in English must pass an M.A. exam and be recommended for admission into the Ph.D. program by their M.A. committee. An application for the Ph.D. program also must be submitted to the Graduate School. Applicants with master's degrees from other institutions are evaluated on the basis of standard application materials: GPA, GRE scores, statement of purpose, three supporting letters, and a sample of academic writing. You must have attended this institution for at least one year and the degree was earned at an institution in the United States, and you have lived and worked continuously in the U.S since earning the degree. Cambridge English: Advanced / Cambridge English Proficiency C1 level or higher. TOEFL IBT (not Home Edition) - 79 120, IELTS - 6.5 9.0.
