The Literacy, Language, and Culture concentration examines key questions while focusing on these core areas: Analyzing formal and informal approaches to learning about language, literacy, and culture across educational and community environments, Investigating how language intersects with cultural identity in our interconnected world, Studying how diverse populations acquire and employ multiple literacy skills. Our program addresses these topics through various lenses, incorporating sociocultural, cognitive, and developmental theories while emphasizing their real-world applications. Students gain broad exposure to different viewpoints while specializing in their chosen area. As part of this interdisciplinary program, you'll collaborate with peers involved in groundbreaking, nationally-funded research projects that push educational boundaries. The experience includes participation in academic seminars, teaching internships, national conferences, and community initiatives. Our globally renowned faculty applies diverse theoretical frameworks (including cognitive, sociocultural, critical, and feminist perspectives) to study literacy and language development across all age groups. Their expertise spans multiple disciplines such as psychology, linguistics, anthropology, and sociology.
