The Department of French Literature, Thought and Culture at NYU operates under the umbrella of the Center for French Civilization and Culture, connecting multiple academic hubs. This framework encompasses four key areas of French Studies: the Department itself, the Institute of French Studies, NYU Paris, and La Maison Française, collectively forming America's most extensive academic network focused on French culture throughout history. Currently staffed by 20 faculty members covering diverse aspects of French literature and civilization, plus 15 full-time language instructors, the Department also hosts distinguished visiting scholars such as Rda Bensmaa, Franois Cornillat, Marielle Mac, Christian Biet, Yves Citton, Philippe Roger, and Franois Noudelmann. Each semester features about eight graduate seminars, with class sizes between five and fifteen students, allowing both broad curriculum access and personalized faculty engagement.
