Our Ph.D. program equips students for academic careers, whether pursuing traditional faculty roles or alternative academic (Alt-Ac) opportunities in teaching, publishing, and administration. Graduates of Indiana University's English Ph.D. program hold positions across prestigious institutions, including Ivy League schools, major public universities, regional colleges, and liberal arts campuses worldwide. Qualification Requirements
An undergraduate major in English, Communication, or related field is required.
You must take the aptitude/general portion of the Graduate Record Examination. An applicant ordinarily should have at least an overall GPA of 3.2, a GPA in English of 3.7. For admission to the Ph.D. program with an M.A. from a department other than our own, the undergraduate GPA requirement remains the same. Add to this a 3.9 GPA in graduate courses (out of a possible 4.0).
Scores on the GRE should exceed 160 on the Verbal test, the Analytical Writing score should be 5.0 or higher. Scores on the GRE Verbal tests should ordinarily approach 166.
