English has evolved into a multifaceted discipline, and our M.A. and Ph.D. programs aim to provide students with comprehensive foundations in literary and cinematic eras, genres, and key figures while staying attuned to evolving trends in the field and academia. Both programs foster close faculty-student collaboration through mentorship. Students gain broad and specialized knowledge through small pro-seminars covering wide-ranging subjects and advanced seminars focusing on niche topics, facilitating deep intellectual exchange with faculty. Regular events create opportunities for graduate students to connect with distinguished scholars in English and Creative Writing, both formally and casually.
The Ph.D. program is designed for top-tier candidates entering with either a B.A. or M.A., all of whom receive five years of funding. This research-focused degree primarily prepares students for college-level teaching. Our department excels in early modern literature, 18th-19th century British literature, American literature and culture, and film studies, among other specialties. Compact pro-seminars and advanced seminars help students build both comprehensive understanding and specialized expertise while engaging rigorously with faculty. All professors share deep commitments to literary history, forms, critical theory, and cultural studies.
